The most expensive computer consultant may not necessarily be the best for you, but the number one priority is price. As a consumer, you know that you are always offered competitive pricing for services and products. Companies compete hard on price, and it’s no surprise that it’s the first factor you think of when you’re looking for computer repair or consulting services.

However, services are usually not comparable to tangible goods like cars or office equipment. In the case of products, you can compare features and benefits. With services, there are too many intangibles to easily compare. One thing is for sure, if what you really want is cheap computer support, you can be sure that you will have some big or small problems in the future.

For example, if you lose all the files on your computer, or if you need to redo the work when you find out that it wasn’t completed correctly in the first place, the price won’t seem so attractive.  If your business relies heavily on your computer network and the information it contains, then it’s probably best to take the time to choose the most qualified consultant, rather than a cheap consultant. The definition of a quality consultant is one that provides the professional advice and support you need.

If you can find such a consultant, you can reduce your company’s costs while improving productivity, customer service and sales. And they will be responsive whenever you need them. Before hiring a computer consultant to install a new network, hire him to do small repairs and network audits first. This will give you the opportunity to make sure he shows up on time, does his job, and isn’t too hard to work with. If you are not satisfied with the consultant’s work on a small project, then there is no need to move forward with a larger project.

Also, many computers consultants charge by the hour rather than a fixed fee. This is good for them but can be dangerous for you. Don’t agree to this type of contract unless you have an established and reliable relationship with your consultant. It is possible that once you actually start working with him, your consultant will do whatever he wants with your project, and it could actually benefit him.

So, ask for a fixed fee upfront that details what kind of results you will achieve within the agreed-upon budget.  Finally, let’s talk about an important mental attitude. Some people may not be able to honestly say what is on their mind for fear of appearing rude or unreasonable. However, if you have any concerns or doubts, try to voice them to your prospective consultant before you sign the contract.

If you have hired him for the project, you should ask him to specify in the contract how he will overcome those concerns. For example, if you’re worried that he won’t return your calls right away, let him know. If you are afraid that he may not be able to handle the job, tell him honestly. You don’t have to be harsh or obnoxious to the consultant. Just let him know that you have some concerns and you also need to bring the opportunity to share what he can do to ensure that you will not be disappointed.
